Summer Craft Project that Gives Back: Kindness Rocks

IMG_1130My son, Thomas, loves to collect interesting things he finds on the pathways that we hike onIMG_1132 around our neighborhood. We’ve even made him a box where he stashes his treasures, which currently include three acorns, a few shiny pebbles, a styrofoam bird, and a little stuffed skunk.

But now, what we’re really on the lookout for are kindness rocks. Have you heard about this new craze, sweeping towns from Cape Cod, MA to Cape May, NJ this summer? Basically, kids and parents are gathering up smooth rocks, painting them with colorful or inspiration designs, and placing them throughout nature for people to discover.IMG_1125

Yesterday, my youngest son and I got in on the fun, painting some rocks after he was finished with camp for the day. I loved the idea that we could do a craft that had a life and purpose beyond mouldering alongside the art projects that I still haven’t organized from the last day of school.

I leaned toward rainbows, he tended toward spiders and Pollock-esque polka dots, but we both had a really nice time painting, and talking about where we were going to plant our creations and who—neIMG_1126ighbor Chloe? mailperson Barb?—might come upon them.

This morning, just after a rainstorm, we decided to plant a rainbow rock at the edge of the pond at the end of our street. My son was a little sad to part with it, but ultimately decided that it’s sometimes even more fun to give than receive. A lesson as valuable in the heat of summer as at holiday time.

Some tips about creating and distributing your kindness rocks:

-If you can’t find relatively smooth rocks in your immediate area, hardware and garden supply stores sell smooth gray rocks (often called Mexican Beach pebble, $11 at Amazon for 30 lbs.), which are perfect for the project, at a very low price.

-Acrylic paint like this colorful sampler ($8, Amazon), with small brushes like these ($6, Amazon), work great. Invest in a spray can of clar UV/moisture protecting spray (like Krylon’s Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating aerosol spray, $10 at Amazon), which will protect your designs from the elements.

-Refrain from putting your rocks in national parks, or any other public spaces that have a “leave no trace” policy. Think about well-trod pathways around ponds and woodlands, or even grassy parks or playgrounds, near you.

Keep Kids Safe from Ticks

keep kids safe from ticksYou may not have appreciated the harsh winter, but there’s one species that did: ticks. According to scientists, the snow that covered much of the country acted like a cozy blanket for the critters, allowing them to survive and propagate in unusually high numbers. And they’re not just hanging out in the deep woods. “We’re finding plenty of infected ticks in built environments, places like city parks, playgrounds, work campuses, college campuses,” a Binghamton University researcher told CBS Boston last month.

What’s especially worrisome is that ticks’ favorite meal appears to be kids. Children between ages 5 to 14 are the most common carriers of Lyme disease, which can cause a wide range of serious medical problems, from joint pain and fatigue (in the early stages) as well as neurological, behavioral, and emotional disturbances (in more advanced cases). An early CDC study of 64 New Jersey grade schoolers with Lyme found that median duration of their illness was 363 days, and the mean number of school days missed because the child was too ill to attend was 103 days. 78% of the parents stated that their children experienced a fall in grade point average during the time of illness.

According to experts, it’s time that parents start thinking of tick prevention the way we do sun protection or hand washing. For those of us who grew up thinking that the little bugs were nothing more than an icky nuisance, taking daily measures against ticks is a hard new habit to start. But Nevena Zubcevik, D.O., an attending physician at Harvard Medical School and the Co-Director of The Dean Center for Tick Borne Illness at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, has generously shared these easy-to-follow guidelines for keeping kids safe from ticks this summer and beyond.

STARTING IN THE SPRING…make your home and yard an unhappy place for ticks.
Pruning excess bushes and making sure you keep the grass short in your yard is a good practice. So is spraying the yard for ticks—there are lawn-care companies who offer organic options to insecticides. If you have a dog, consider applying anti-tick medication monthly, even in winter months. Dogs and other pets frequently bring ticks into the house.

EVERY MORNING…Spray your kids with a research-proven tick repellent.
“Tick prevention, given the wide area of presence, should be a daily practice,” says Dr. Zubcevik. You don’t have to venture out to the woods to get a tick bite. Recent studies show that urban parks, yards and play areas have ticks that carry these diseases. The reason for the widespread presence of ticks is that they live on small rodents like mice, squirrels and rabbits. They are also found on migratory birds, so ticks carrying illnesses generally found in other parts of the country can now be detected most anywhere.
Long pants and socks are especially helpful for defending kids against ticks, which tend to attach to their hosts’ ankles and legs first. But it can be unreasonable to ask kids to wear long clothes on a hot summer’s day. A recent Consumer Report showed that sprays such as Repel with lemon eucalyptus or Sawyer with 20% picaridin have the capability of keeping mosquitoes and ticks away for up to 8 hours – and outperformed compounds with DEET in their testing. “Those compounds are also safer than DEET for repetitive use in children,” says Dr. Zubcevik.

IN THE EVENING…Check your kids’ bodies for ticks, and wash bodies and clothes.
Ticks mostly live on wood or bushes and tall grass. They’ll attach to your leg and can crawl up and enter the waist or hairline area. Since kids are short, they also often brush by a bush and end up with a tick in or around their earlobe, hair or armpit. A prompt shower with a full body tick check after being outdoors on daily basis can help find ticks that just attached and catch them before they have transmitted disease.  Making sure you check between toes, in belly button and earlobes as well as the buttocks, groin and hair is key. Hair-drying in the summer can help kill small ticks that would otherwise be missed with a tick check – though time consuming, such practice can help long term prevention.

IF YOU FIND A TICK…Remove it, freeze it, and talk to a doctor.
If you find a tick you can use thin tweezers to catch the tick at the insert site, closest to the skin and gently jiggle the tick until it detaches. If the tick is embedded deep, then a visit to the doctor would be warranted, says Dr. Zubcevik. (Never burn or squeeze a tick. The tick carries most of the bacteria in the stomach and by squeezing it you run a risk of injecting the contents into the person. You should then keep the tick, and freeze it in a ziplock bag and then send it for testing.) The testing is done at UMass, and in five business days they will let you know whether the tick has any serious illnesses.
If the result is positive for a tick-borne illness, talk to your child’s pediatrician about options. There are some opposing views about prophylactic treatment. Some physicians say that because the diseases the ticks carry can be debilitating and in some cases life-threatening, it’s important to treat if there was evidence of a bite; while others disagree and prefer to wait for symptoms of illness. “The problem is that the longer you wait, the higher the chances the bacteria has had time to spread throughout the body, in which case it might be more difficult to treat,” Dr. Zubcevik says. Current studies at John’s Hopkins University show that up to 35% of people develop chronic symptoms despite treatment for Lyme. “We do not know what the exact reasons of these chronic symptoms are,” notes Dr. Zubcevik. “Scientists have postulated that it could be an autoimmune reaction that is triggered by the infection, chronic inflammation, or continued infection by the bacteria.”

ALWAYS BE ON THE LOOKOUT…for signs and symptoms of Lyme.
Red flags are flu like symptoms, joint pains or swollen joints, sudden change in behavior, sudden development of repetitive movements, lethargy, fatigue, and headaches. A classic “bulls-eye” shaped rash around the bite site may be present, but not always, and therefore should not be required for diagnosis of this illness.
One big reason kids are at high risk is that they generally do not communicate symptoms very well. Parents should know that in case their kids develop any symptoms that are new and concerning, they should be vigilant to find out whether or not their child needs treatment. “Currently we have very poor testing for Lyme disease,” says Dr. Zubcevik. “The current test misses 89% of Lyme disease cases in the first 8 weeks of infection.”
Since testing is so inadequate, Dr. Zubcevik warns, results should not be depended on exclusively for diagnosis. Symptoms and risk factors should also be strongly considered. “The treatment is actually quite benign,” she says. “We use antibiotics such as amoxicillin for children under the age of 8 and doxycycline for older kids. Both of these antibiotics have good safety records and are generally well tolerated. With these facts in mind, both parents and physicians should feel comfortable starting a patient on antibiotics if they clinically present as Lyme.”

Bottom line…As long as Lyme remains so tricky to diagnose and treat, taking precautions is key. “Parents should be vigilant with prevention,” says Dr. Zubcevik. “It’s what we have most control over.”

Cooperative Board Games: A Cure for Summer Squabbles?

cooperative games for kidsSummer is fantastic and all, but there are two problems that always seem to heat up with the weather around our house: boredom and sibling squabbles. School vacation ensures more downtime, together, which is awesome until my three boys decide there’s nothing to do but bother one another. It’s times like these when I often suggest that they play a game—we have tons, from classics like Stratego to sports-themed ones like Foosball. But these competitions don’t always end well.

Recently, a friend introduced me to the world of cooperative games when her son gave my 5-year-old a board game called “Race to the Treasure” for his birthday. In it, players work together to create a path to a treasure before mean ogres do. The excitement was not in the competition, but the thrill of choosing cards and working together toward a common goal, and it was, surprisingly, an instant hit in our house. I’ve since done a little reading about cooperative games, and found out that it’s a growing trend, and not for nothing: Academics have studied these activities and discovered there are some very real benefits, including decreasing kids’ aggressive behaviors both during, and after, play.

Check out some really excellent examples of the genre, below. While many cooperative games exist online, too, I’m sticking to board games here, because I see this as a great opportunity to break from electronics—and as it happens, many of these games have super-rich graphics that are almost as eye-popping as what you’d see on a screen. Consider stocking up in time for summer “break”…at press time, Amazon was running a promotion in which several cooperative games were deeply discounted.


Race to the Treasure
Best for ages 4 and up
By drawing cards with various-shaped pathways and using their spatial relation skills, children must find their way to the treasure before a mean ogre does. Additional cards representing keys and “snacks” for the ogre add some strategy challenges to the game.


Dinosaur Escape
Best for ages 4 and up
The dinos need to get back to Dinosaur Island; can kids work together using their memory and collaborative skills to return them safely?


Outfoxed
Best for ages 5 and up
A pot pie is missing, and children need to gather clues to crack the case. The cool “special evidence” scanner might be kids’ favorite part of the game.


Jenga
Best for ages 6 and up
There’s a debate out there about whether this is a competitive or cooperative game, and the answer is that it can be either. Instead of tagging the person who topples the tower as the loser, spin the game as a challenge to see how high the group can build the tower.


Forbidden Island
Best for ages 8 and up
A Mensa award winner, this pioneer among cooperative games challenges players to work together to capture sacred treasures before the island under them sinks into oblivion. My 8-year-old got this as a birthday gift last year, and the boys love not just playing the game, but also simply checking out the cool illustrations and game pieces.


Mysterium
Best for ages 10 and up
Slightly spooky and definitely exciting, this game has a strong storyline about a crime that’s been committed at an old castle. Players are divided between a ghost and psychic mediums who need to interpret signs to solve the mystery.
Best for ages 10 and up


Freedom: The Underground Railroad
Best for ages 13 and up
Combining history, social consciousness, strategy, and collaboration, this game pretty much has it all. Players assume the role as abolitionists who must evade slave catchers to raise money and shepherd people to safety. The game has variable difficulty settings, but it’s pretty complex nature does make it best for older kids.

Why (and How) to Plan a National Park Trip Now

why to plan a national park tripMy husband and I recently became convinced that when it comes to family tourism, nothing beats a visit to one of America’s great national parks. A park trip combines all the things we’d ideally want children to soak up when sight-seeing: nature, adventure, history, and, perhaps best of all with young kids, space to explore without fear of someone getting left behind on the subway platform. And, oh: Compared to a big, bustling city, or, for godsakes, a theme park, the cost tends to be right, too.

For our first big park trip, we stayed close to home, and went to the first East Coast national park ever created: Acadia National Park in Maine. None of us had been there before, which was ideal: Part of the magic of a great family trip is experiencing something amazing together for the first time—like Thunder Hole, where the Atlantic surf crashes into a cave-like break in the craggy Maine rocks to create a huge wake and roaring sound.

Our appreciation of the awesomeness of our national park system has only grown since finding out that several times a year, park admittance is free. This weekend (April 20-22, 2017), for instance, admission is free at all 412 national park sites. That includes the biggies—the 59 “main” parks (think Acadia, Grand Canyon, and Redwood National Forest) as well as national military and historic parks (like Gettysburg).There’s no doubt a park near you that you’ve been meaning to explore—or didn’t even know about. Less Homework, More Home Work

kids doing choresPlenty of summertime pleasures from our childhoods are going the way of the Dodo—kick the can, Kool-Aid, fireflies—but perhaps none are as much as an understandable bummer for our kids than a break from homework. Sure, there was the odd handout of suggested reading lists, which may have motivated my mother to nudge me past the Babysitters Club section of the sandy-floored Atlantic Bookshop on Rehoboth Beach boardwalk. But today’s children come home from their last day of school not only with “required” reading lists, but also composition books, workbooks, and a laundry list of assignments and expectations. And I admit, after reading about the “summer slide” when it comes to kids’ knowledge, I’ve embraced this new-school-order, and enforce—there’s no other word for it—10 minutes or so of homework most days we’re home.

The other day, after my boys were literally rolling on the hardwood floors in despair over the prospect of starting the requisite summer letter to their new teachers, I wondered if perhaps there was a better, more creative, more merciful way to keep kids’ brains from turning to slush over the summer. I sent an email to a fellow blogger who writes about educational theory: former middle school teacher and creator of The Cult of Pedagogy, Jennifer Gonzalez. I was wondering if you might be willing to get back to me with some of your favorite, experience- or research-based ideas for keeping children’s minds engaged during the lazy, hazy, unstructured days of summer, I wrote her. Beyond homework.

Jennifer’s reply surprised me. First, she admitted that despite the fact that her blog focuses on helping kids learn, she, too, feels like she’s falling short in the summer mental enrichment department, too. During unstructured hours, she says, she ends up letting her kids spend far more time on their devices than she thinks she should. However, she writes, I can say that one thing I’m doing this summer is to give them more hands-on work in the house. During the school year we are usually so rushed to “get things done” that I don’t have the patience to let them do a lot of household chores or cook their own food. And I rarely remember to follow up and make sure they did them. But this summer I’m having them wash dishes, take out the trash and recycling, and pick up dog poop on a regular schedule. When they ask if they can cook something, the answer is usually “yes,” and I am even able to get them to clean up after themselves with some level of satisfaction. To me, this is stimulating in a different way than academic enrichment or summer activities would be. It’s teaching them the kind of responsibility and skills they will need to function as citizens, as roommates, and as members of their own families someday.

How simple, and smart. With more time in their days, fewer clothes to dirty, and tools like hoses at the ready, summer is, of course, the ideal time to begin getting kids into the habit of more “home work.”  Plus, though I’ve written before about how kids can benefit from doing work around the house, research supporting this theory has only grown since I wrote that post. A recent survey of more than 5000 parents by the smartphone data company Pollfish found that those who insist on regular chores are more likely to report their kids as being successful in school and in relationships.

You can find loads of age-appropriate chore charts in the blogosphere—and a hilarious send-up of the genre by a psychologist mom, here. So, without foisting yet another to-do list for child enrichment on readers who probably master the chore game better than me, I’ll simply share a few of the best ideas I’ve found for getting kids into a more helpful mindset for the balance of summer—with seasonal needs and realism in mind.

Use preschoolers as “helpers.” We all know that getting kids to do chores can be a chore in itself, and that’s ten-fold for littles. Rather than set them out on a task solo, have them work alongside you more often. Some good ideas for this age group:
–Pulling weeds
-Scrubbing car mats
-Wiping down a picnic or patio table
-Rounding up backyard toys before dinnertime
-Putting socks into pairs

Give 6- to 12-year-old “real” jobs—and don’t hover. Children this age are old enough to be decently helpful, but they—and you—will only get frustrated if you nitpick. Show them a technique once, if need be, and then let them be. Some summer tasks that are worth dishing out to elementary schoolers:
-Watering plants and flowers
-Washing car exteriors
-Cleaning and hosing down garbage cans
-Organizing toys in the garage
-Folding—or at least putting away—their own laundry

IMG_0012Make a Job Jar. I’m not a huge fan of “making a game” out of anything that seems unpalatable for kids, but this strategy for getting children on board with chores is pretty simple and has been well received in our house. Label a mason jar and put folded up pieces of paper labeled with chores that need to get done—think of things that have been hanging over your head for awhile, like finding lost library books or cleaning underneath couches—inside. Once a week, let kids pick from the job jar (and maybe actually earn a few bucks for it).

Appeal to their “App”sessiveness. Allow them to earn iPad time by first checking off a to-do list online, via one of the new apps created just for this purpose. These are helpful especially if you’re having trouble getting a chore system for kids off the ground. Protecting Kids From Mosquitoes

protecting kids from mosquitoesAre you, or anyone in your family, a mosquito magnet like me? In a group of people, I am always the first swatting; and the next day, itching like mad. I’ve twice—once, on my Hawaiian honeymoon—had to go on a crash course of oral steroids to treat dozens of oversized welts caused by a single buggy encounter.

Medical literature suggests that some people are genetically predisposed to attracting these mosquitos—something about the amount of heat and carbon dioxide we produce—and that seems to play out in our family, given that my dad, and now my youngest son, seem predisposed to an inordinate amount of itchy, oversized bites this time of year. But it’s now apparent that, even here in the states, these flies are more than pesky, and we all need to take protection more seriously. While findings of bugs carrying the West Nile virus are on the rise, Zika has officially infiltrated the U.S.: as of mid-July CDC reports that more than 1,300 people have carried the virus into the country. As this fascinating chart by the Bill Gates Foundation illustrates, mosquitos are the deadliest creature on the planet, more dangerous than humans, snakes, and 12 other fearsome creatures combined.

Last summer, I did a round-up of expert tips for steering clear of ticks; as we roll into mosquito high season, I’m sharing takeaways from the most recent research for keeping kids safe from ‘skeeters.

DEET is safe and works—but make sure you choose the right concentration.
While it may feel fishy to spray your child down with a chemical that can (for real) melt plastic, a recent review by British public health researchers echoed many others to show that DEET products are safe for kids when used as directed, and are perhaps the most time-tested way to successfully repel insects. Studies show that a product should contain at least 10% to work much at all, but effectiveness seems to plateau at 50% concentrations. The higher the concentration, the longer it lasts; but as with most chemicals, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends choosing a product that contains the lowest DEET concentration that will be effective for the amount a time a child will be exposed to buggy conditions. For children over 2 months of age only (chemical use on newborns should be avoided), the AAP and CDC recommend choosing a DEET product between 10% and 30%—the former lasting about 2 hours, and the latter for around 5 hours—and reapplying as the product directs or when you feel the bugs starting bite again. Unfortunately, many sprays marketed to “families” have too-low concentrations of the protective chemical. So be sure to check the fine print on the bottom of the front label: Among the four DEET-based bug spray options at my local supermarket yesterday, three were 7% concentration.

Good DEET spray choice for day trip (for kids over 2 months): Cutter Backwoods Insect Repellent (25%)

Two lesser known repellents work too, if you can find ’em.
Picaridin is another chemical repellent with a long safety track record, and a 2016 Consumer Reports study found that sprays with 20% concentration of Picaridin were even more widely effective than DEET. The problem is, it’s hard to find products with concentrations this high outside of Europe and the Internet (see below). Another winner: Oil of lemon eucalyptus. Though a more natural choice than DEET and Picaridin, it’s not recommended for use in kids under 3 (it can be a skin irritant).

Good picaridin choice (for kids over 2 months): Sawyer Premium Insect Repellent with Picaridin (20%)

Good Oil of lemon eucalyptus choice (for kids over 3 only): Repel Lemon Eucalyptus (30%)

Skip bands, bracelets, bath oils, and candles.
Those cute little rubber bracelets and pretty citronella lanterns aren’t going to do more than decorate wrists and picnic tables. Consumer Reports found they had little to no effect on shooing away mosquitoes, echoing a 2002 New England Journal of Medicine report that also found that Skin-So-Soft didn’t repel the bugs for longer than about 10 minutes.

Make your home unfriendly to mosquitoes.
While these bugs are wily opponents, there are things you can do to make your property less hospitable to them. Make sure window and door screens are tight fitting and don’t have holes. Eliminate sources of standing rainwater where mosquitoes like to breed (such a empty pots, buckets, and vinyl covers for pool and furniture), and try a product like mosquito dunks if you have a catchment basin (like we do). You can talk to a professional lawn care company about research-proven treatments for your lawn and trees to dissuade mosquitoes, but these tend to be expensive, and, according to the American Mosquito Control Association, widespread pesticide spraying may harm other, beneficial insects.

Be aware of time of day and weather.
Mosquitoes that carry different types of diseases like to emerge at different times of day. In most areas of the U.S., mosquitoes tend to be peskiest in the early evening hours, but if you’re in a place where these bugs tend to cause dengue, yellow fever, or chikungunya, you need to be vigilant about spraying and keeping doors and windows closed during daylight hours, too. Also, be sure to use repellent in humid conditions; think the woods just after a rainstorm. To see what types of mosquitoes are active in your area, check out this map by the CDC. And regardless of time or climate, experts urge us parents to start thinking about bug spray just as we would sunscreen: an essential, daily habit. Unfortunately, scratchy legs aren’t the only things we’re protecting kids against these days.

Healthy Summer Thirst Quenchers

healthy summer thirst quenchersWhen most of us were kids, Coke was as common in the ‘fridge as milk, and thirsty Little Leaguers were as likely to be given Hi-C as water. But times have changed, and so has awareness when it comes to what our kids drink. Even wholesome-sounding juice has gotten a bad rap, and for good reason; a 16-ounce Ocean Spray Cran-Apple drink has 320 calories and 62 grams of sugar—more than three Twinkies.

“Think of juice like sugar water,” my friend, an obesity researcher at Harvard, recently told me while we watched second-grade soccer players suck down OJ and Munchkins after a recent game. Like the American Academy of Pediatrics, he advised that we should be offering children two beverages: milk and water.

Sound advice; but not much fun. Especially on a hot summer afternoon or evening.

I’m not ready to deprive my kids of soda and juice completely. Some of my warmest childhood memories involve Shirley Temples. I think lemonade is a rite—and right—of summer. But for those hot, not-so-special occasions, I wanted some refreshing options that don’t involve a snack-cake’s worth of sugar. So I fooled around with the blender and talked to my nutritionist and foodie friends. Then, I asked the kids to belly up to the kitchen island for some taste testing. Here’s what they say are worthy of second rounds.

This is a great way to use up the watermelon in your ‘fridge that’s become a little mushier than ideal. If grown-ups are involved, add a vodka or gin to the adults’ pitcher. Delicious.

3 cups watermelon chunks
2 tablespoons lime juice
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup cubed or crushed ice
1/2 cup water

If ice is in big chunks, add that to blender first to chop it up a bit. Then add other ingredients and blend until smooth but not too frothy. Serve immediately; give a quick stir if watermelon pulp floats to top.

Makes 4 cups

lighter lemonadeLighter Lemonade

I have yet to meet a kid who doesn’t love lemonade, and to deny children this summer staple seems cruel and unusual. But to counteract the sour base fruit, lemonade typically includes loads of sugar—27 grams, or 2.25 tablespoons, per cup. Thankfully, the kitchen scientists at Cook’s Illustrated have come up with a simple trick to cut half the sugar out of lemonade without losing sweetness: adding the zest to the lemonade while making it (and straining before serving). It works!

5 lemons
4 tablespoons sugar
2.5 cups room temperature or warm water
a pinch of salt

Put the juice of five lemons and most of the zest from all of them into a pitcher. (If you don’t already have them, a Microplane zester and an enameled citrus press make these jobs easy, and will serve heroically in countless other recipes.) Let the zest and juice sit for five minutes. In the meantime, mix water, sugar, and pinch of salt in a pitcher. Then, strain the lemon juice into the sugar water so the zest is removed. Chill in fridge for at least a half-hour and serve cold or over ice.

Makes 4 cups

ginger iced teaGinger Iced Tea

While kids aren’t commonly fans of hot tea, many like cold tea, and it can be a real treat for a summer dinner, luncheon or picnic. I love this flavorful homemade version, adapted from healthy chef Ellie Krieger. The ginger doesn’t overwhelm, just adds a nice zip (and some stomach-soothing benefits).

1/3 cup honey
1/3 cup roughly chopped ginger
2 cups water (plus 6 cups later)
5 black tea bags (I use decaffeinated Lipton, but choose your favorite—Raspberry or Orange flavored black would be good)
Juice from half a lemon

Bring 2 cups water, honey, and ginger chunks in saucepan over stove. Once it starts to boil, lower heat and simmer for five minutes. Turn off heat and add tea bags, letting steep for a half-hour. Meanwhile, fill pitcher with 6 cups cold water and juice from half of a lemon. After tea has steeped, strain out solids and add warm tea into cold water and lemon juice mixture. Chill for at least half-hour in fridge and serve cold or over ice.

Makes 8 cups (a large pitcher’s worth)

This is a simple idea that elevates plain old seltzer into something a little more special. While I’ve posted about making homemade fruity ice cubes before, you can also skip the dicing and the trays and just freeze whole, small, firm fruit, like berries or grapes, to create instant, easy ice cubes that are really fun to eat at the end of your drink. Challenge the soda-lovers in your family to replace diet or flavored soda with seltzer or plain club soda for a week. We find that once you wean off of it, regular soda tastes cloyingly sweet.

1 liter favorite flavored seltzer (we like raspberry-lime, cranberry-lime, or Polar seltzer’s new Watermelon Margarita flavor)
1 cup raspberries (or blueberries or blackberries)

Spread a cup of berries on a small tray, plate, or piece of waxed paper in the freezer for at least an hour. Pour seltzer into a pretty pitcher and float a few frozen berries on top. Serve immediately.

Makes 4 cups

HHK’s resident nutrition advisor, the fabulous dietitian and cookbook author Dana White, loves serving fruit-infused waters to her kids in the summertime. “My girls like experimenting with different colors and flavors so we make a bit of a game out of it— making small batches to see what we like best,” she says. Because we are Red Sox fans around here, and it just so happens that a handful of Fenway-hued fruits and veggies—green apples, cucumbers, and green grapes—happen to hold up extra-nicely in a pitcher of water over time, we’ve landed upon this as our favorite flavor combo this year.

1/2 cup while green grapes (frozen in freezer for an hour beforehand makes them extra cold and crunchy)
1/2 cup cucumber slices (about 1/4 inch thickness)
1/2 cup green apple slices (about 1/4 inch thickness)
8 cups water

Combine cold or frozen fruit and water in pitcher, and chill in fridge for at least one hour. Serve infused water alone or with a couple of the fruits and veggies floating on top.

Makes about 8 cups (a large pitcher’s worth)

Best Podcasts for Kids

You may have gathered that I’m a little obsessed with podcasts. Why clean the dishes in silence (or in earshot of post-dinner mutant-robot sword fights…why does their energy always ramp up right after dinner when you need it to dissipate)? Popping in an earbud and catching part of a Fresh Air interview or Dear Sugar Radio episode doesn’t just pass the time and force me to think beyond work and family minutiae. On some days, it keeps me sane.

I realized recently that the same might be true for my kids. There are plenty of short, “dead” periods in the car and at home when, tired and left to their own devices, my kids will choose to needle and whine. While I realize that down time to just “be” is important to childhood, I think we have plenty of those. What I could use is a little brain teaser when energy is short but I’d like my kids to do more than zone out to Sonic the Hedgehog. The other month, I covered audiobooks. Today, I’m talking podcasts.

While podcasts about kids (i.e., parenting) are plentiful on iTunes, podcasts for kids are few and far between. But among these, there are several gems. Sample from some of the programs below, and hook up your phone or the kids’ iPads to the car or home stereo when you’re in this zone of betwixt and between. And, just in case you don’t know how to access, much less download, a podcast, here’s a quick primer: If you have a smartphone, you should have (or can download) a Podcast app, where your chosen programs will be stored as you subscribe to or download them. To find one—and there are hundreds of thousands of free ones—fire up iTunes or Stitcher and search for whatever you’re interested in…fashion, politics, parenting, whatever. These services will cue up the 10 or so most popular podcasts in that genre. You can subscribe (new episodes download automatically), listen to a single episode if you are in a Wi-Fi or good cell zone, or download one by one. 

Brains On!
Ages 5-12
In terms of quality, this is tops among kids’ podcasts, probably because it’s run by three public radio vets. Each episode explores a kid-friendly scientific phenomenon or conundrum—why is some hair curly? Is there an edge to space? Smart, excited kids and friendly, real-life scientists animate the explanation. Just in case brain cramp sets in, each installment is broken up by a feature called “Mystery Sounds” in which a short audio clip is run and everyone gets to ponder the source. Older kids might balk at some goofy elements, but they’ll also surprise themselves by learning something.

Ear Snacks
Ages 3-6
Indie kids’ rock musicians (and parents) Andrew and Polly mix it up on this wacky podcast, which covers topics from “Beeps” to “Boxes” to “Shadows” with a mix of science, stream-of-consciousness ramblings, and surprisingly good music. Best for the preschool set but some musically inclined early elementary schoolers might get into it, too.

Storynory
Ages 3-8
Among little kids’ audio, there are a lot of creaky-feeling folk-tale retellings, but what’s great about this podcast is its mix of classic and new, and long and short, with some funny poems and songs mixed in. Actors read myths, fairy tales, and original stories you’ve never heard before.

Story Pirates
Ages 5-12
It’s a clever concept: top comedians and actors adapt stories written by kids into musical theater. The performances are amusing, but perhaps the best part is that children get the idea that their ideas matter. (Sample episode teaser: “From the Wilderness show, the Story Pirates present new story ‘Bird Tornado’ by Austin Fuemmeler!” You can imagine Austin’s delight.) Each podcast in an excerpt from the Story Pirates’ weekly Sirius XM radio show and nicely edited down to 6-20-minute bites: perfect for the ride to camp or the pool.

Tumble
Ages 5-12
Husband-and-wife duo Lindsay Patterson and Marshall Escamilla are psyched about science, and are on a quest to get entire families feeling the same way. What it lacks in polish compared to, say, Brains On, it makes up for in enthusiasm. Perhaps you do know why dogs or loyal, or why bats hang upside down; for the rest of us know-littles, it’s a great podcast for parents, too.

even just a well-stocked supermarket—are faced with bumper crops of just-ripe (or low-priced) corn, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, peaches, and more. Too often, we pick or purchase perfect produce with high hopes, only to be digging a spongy specimen out of the crisper too weeks later.

Rather than try to selectively use all this great produce one at a time, I’ve lately been making a big salad that showcases several at once. This approach is nicely family-friendly, kids can pick around the one or two things they don’t like, and seem to be more inclined to try something new when it’s cozied up to a fruit or veggie they’re used to. You can also mix and match to highlight whatever is growing or on sale. The one constant: watermelon, which all kids seem to love and has a mild taste that pairs well pretty much any summer veggie.

By not dousing it with heavy dressing—just a squeeze of citrus and a splash of good olive oil—this salad lasts for at least a few days in the ‘fridge. It’s great on its own or mixed with some protein—quinoa, edamame, cheese, pine nuts for lunch, or shredded rotisserie chicken, salmon, or shrimp for dinner.

Ultimate Summer Salad

Ingredients

  • 1-2 cups diced watermelon
  • 1 cup tomato chunks (about five halved cherry or 1-2 seeded and chunked standard tomatoes)
  • 1 cup fresh corn kernels (shuck and boil 1-2 ears for 4 minutes; cool and slice kernels off)
  • 1 cup cucumber pieces (about 1 large cucumber; make half moon shapes or use these great flower shaped cutters
  • 1 cup yellow or green zucchini chunks
  • 1 cup diced fresh peach (about 2 small peaches)
  • 1/4 cup basil or mint, minced
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper (optional, to taste)
  • One small lemon or lime, or 1/8 cup rice wine vinegar

Instructions

  1. Place veggies in large bowl. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with herbs and salt (and pepper if desired). Place fruit chunks on top, and squeeze lemon or vinegar to taste. Mix well and serve at room temperature. Refrigerate leftovers.
  2. KIDS LUNCH: Serve with ham roll ups, cheese sticks, or mini sandwiches on the side
  3. GROWN-UP LUNCH: Mix in any or all: 1 cup cooked quinoa, 1/4 cup pine nuts, 1/4 cup shelled, edamame, 1/4 cup feta, 1/4 cup diced mozzarella
  4. FOR DINNER: Mix in or add to the side: shredded rotisserie chicken, poached salmon, grilled shrimp

Neighborhood Games Kids Should Know

neighborhood gamesAs kids age, telling them to “go play”—the refrain of summer—gets trickier. Lately, I’ve been longing for the days when my older boys happily played with a jumble of toys or on our swing set for hours on playdates. Now, when my 9- and 7-year-old sons have friends over to our house, they play some sports, sometimes skirmish with Nerf or water guns, and ask, disappointingly often, to use the computer or iPad. We’ve resisted buying an Xbox—for better or worse, depending on how you look at it.

On summer days in my childhood, neighborhood kids would play together for hours, no digital or sports gear needed. We played games—various forms of tag, Red Rover, Kick the Can, and when the fireflies emerged, Manhunt or Ghost in the Graveyard. So when my older sons had two equally active, adventurous friends over this afternoon, I got two sticks, tied bandanas to them, and suggested Capture the Flag. They played for nearly two hours, swapping alliances for various rounds—and I haven’t heard such delighted shrieks—or seen such sweaty faces—from a group of kids in a long time.

It occurred to me that my kids don’t know how to play most of the neighborhood games that dominated my childhood. So, as we close out a camp-packed July and enter a less structured August, I’m making a cheat sheet of games for my children and their friends (you can select and print the 8 x 10 sheet below). Feel free to adapt the finer points; you may have used different rules and names than we suburban Philly kids did in the 80s. And if, on a summer’s evening, you want to jump into a round of Manhunt, expect to score some major points with the kids.
